How confident do you feel with your race day nutrition strategy?

Race nutrition. It’s something most of know we should be developing and practicing, but what makes a successful race nutrition strategy?

A successful nutrition strategy will depend on the athlete, the duration of the event and the type of the event. That said, here are a few things to consider when developing your race day nutrition strategy.

  • Did you carb load effectively
  • Have you planned and practiced your race nutrition
  • What is your pre race and in-race hydration plan?
  • Do you know what products work for you?
  • Do you know how many carbohydrates to consume per hour?
  • Do you know what nutrition products to have and when?
  • Do you need a strategy for caffeine intake?
  • Do you know where and how you will carry everything?
  • Do you know what you will pick up and the aid stations?
  • Do you know what to put in your personal needs bag?

A race nutrition strategy should be individualised and practiced in advance of your ‘A’ races to find the approach that works to you. That's why we include regular race-specific training sessions for our coached athletes. These sessions set out the nutrition strategy to practice, with the goal over time of adapting and refining, to develop an approach with works for the individual athlete.
